Montclair State University
Montclair State University (MSU) offers a wide range of studies within the Nutrition and Food Science Department.

Applied Nutrition is the first concentration that falls under the illustrious umbrella of Nutrition and Food Science
Applied Nutrition is a segment that is focused on individuals who would like to work in the field of nutrition, however in non-clinical settings. (See Dietetics).
While majoring in Nutrition and Food Science with a concentration in Applied Nutrition, there are many other disciplines you can focus on at the same time, including:
- Public Health
- Political Science

Dietetics is the second concentration that falls under the mentioned umbrella.
This branch of study is by far the most loaded in terms of work. Registered Dietitians must not only hold a bachelors degree, they also have the complete over 1,000 hours of supervised practice at an accredited Dietetics Internship.
After achieving those two goals, you are then allowed to take the Registered Dietetic exam.
As of January 1, 2024, students who have the desire to sit for the RD exam, must hold a master’s degree.
Food Systems is the third concentration under the Nutrition and Food Science concentration.
This branch of study is all about farm to table and everything in between.
From sustainability and environment issues to adequate food supply for future generations, malnutrition and food insecurity.

This is a wide concentration that covers everything from packaging, research and development, as well as nutritional breakdown.
This concentration prepares students for careers in many different sectors include:

One of the main goals of a food scientist is to improve microbial and chemical safety of foods, as well as quality.
Developing new products, using panels of potential customers to give sensory feedback. This allows company’s to gain knowledge regarding the products they release to the public, offering the highest quality and most nutritional benefits.

This program is offered with Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics program, allowing students interested in this field to get a solid understanding of all areas related to the management side of food science.

Pet Food Science
Animals need to eat too!
Pet Food Science is a focus of study that integrates everything we’ve learned about through the previous Food Science area, however this also combines classes from the Animal Science program offered at Rutgers as well!
Rutgers Food Science is the first of its kind to offer a Pet Food program of study.
Everything from Production, Shelf-life, nutritional aspects, and food safety are all prevalent in Animal food just like human food.
Students that decide to focus on the Pet Food Science aspect of Food Science, will be provided a solid foundation in Food Science with knowledge of Animal Science to provide them the basics of know-how for development of pet foods.
4+1 Graduate Program
Outstanding Rutgers undergraduate students will have the ability to enroll in an dual undergraduate/Graduate degree.
This allows them to get their typical Bachelors and then Masters in a shorter time period and at a lower cost!
When students enter their junior year who meet the requirements are eligible to apply for admission into this program.
If accepted, students will begin taking extra credits their senior year and then complete their Master’s program in as little as one year!
